How To Bond With Your Baby In Tummy Time

If you have been following me for a while, you know how important tummy time is for the development of babies. However, tummy time is more than just an important developmental exercise; it’s a wonderful opportunity to bond with your little one. Read on for both the benefits of tummy time as well as how to make it more enjoyable for both you and baby!

Benefits of Tummy Time

Before we delve into the bonding aspects, let’s quickly review why tummy time is so important:

  • Physical Development: It strengthens the neck, back, and shoulder muscles, which are crucial for crawling, sitting, standing and yes, even those big milestones like walking and running that develop down the line. 

  • Motor Skills: It encourages the development of motor skills.

  • Sensory Development: It provides sensory stimulation, essential for your baby’s brain development.

Making Tummy Time a Bonding Experience

First, let’s take a look at some of the best positions for tummy time. Yes! Tummy time does not ALWAYS have to be on a play mat on the floor. Try these instead… 








✨ On your chest: try this one skin to skin for extra bonus!




✨ On your lap: This one can be done so many ways! Try parallel to your thighs facing out with knees bent, parallel to your shins facing you, perpendicular to your legs with hands on the floor (so many variations!)

✨ In your arms: Hold baby belly down and walk around the house while varying the angle to work on head control.




✨ Face to face: This one is my favorite, especially for 2-3 month olds. Sit on the floor while baby faces you on the couch.




✨On the floor with baby: Whether it's you or a sibling - everyone in the family can benefit from some tummy time!




Now, make tummy time even more fun by adding in some simple activities!

✨Narrate, sing and read: Talk to your baby, narrate what you are doing, or sing songs. Maybe even a fun game of peek-a-boo will bring a smile to your little one’s face! Your voice is comforting and can turn a simple activity into play time. 

✨Gentle Touch and Massage: Use this time to gently touch or massage your baby. This physical connection is soothing and promotes emotional bonding.

✨Use Toys and Books: Introduce colorful toys or picture books during tummy time. This can help make the time more engaging.

  • Start Slow: Begin with short sessions and gradually increase the duration.

  • After Nap or Diaper Change: These are often good times when your baby is alert and happy.
